I also find that unless the subject is totally still, it is hard to get a good exposure. The problem with high ISO is that the shutter speed is so slow that I have to keep my AF active all the time and it is very hard to keep it locked on a subject. I can get very good focusing at night, but I also have to use a high ISO to get a good exposure. The tripod I use is a Manfrotto hanging system tripod. The low light issue is still a problem even on a tripod. With some experimentation and using LiveView, I have fixed the locking up issue and the shutter issue is really the only problem that is still with me. The three issues I have had was that the camera would lock up on me, not autofocus properly, and shutter response was slow. As far as I can remember, I've never had a camera that had all three of those issues (well, I'm sure there are exceptions, but I just haven't encountered them) and I still have not seen a camera that has all three issues. The problems I have had is with autofocus, metering, and shutter response. I've shot pretty much all of it-I've shot with a bag of Tri-X, had a few rolls of Ilford FP4+, and even developed my own. So if you are shooting low light subject matter, the low light issue will probably be the problem for you. The other two issues, low light and shutter response, are both affected by the low light issue. So, let's compare the three issues, shall we? I can tell you from experience that the autofocus really doesn't care about the low light issue-it's not that the low light issue affects autofocus, it's that the low light issue makes it really difficult to autofocus with a tripod. I'm not sure what a photographer would do if they had a tripod but no one would care to use it since they wouldn't be able to shoot low light. So you have to get a balance between noise and low light. Of course, the higher you set the ISO, the more noise you will get. The only way to combat the low light issue is by using a higher ISO setting. The tripod also isn't a huge issue-it is just the most practical method to get good exposure.
